Although King Henry VIII, in the 14th century, commissioned a German clockmaker called Nicholas Kratzer who lived in the British Isles to produce an advanced timekeeping system. The first true recorded clock, designed by a born and bred Englishman called Thomas Tompion, was in the 17th century. Tompion produced over 5,500 watches and 650 clocks before his death in 1713.
