Description
This stunning and rare 19th-century Victorian oak tantalus with three baccarat-style cut-crystal decanter bottles and back mirror is a true statesman drinks centerpiece. The rich flowing wood grain has a beautiful aged patina. The whole piece is adorned with brass/bronze style decoration mounts including ornate handles on either side. It is really a stately home-style drinks presentation piece from the Victorian era in full working and excellent condition. It comes complete with a key.
Bacarat-Style Decanters
There are three superbly cut-crystal decanters of unique design which resemble the Baccarat style. (https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/19787) Each decanter has its original stoppers. They are all in good condition.
Victorian Game Box Tantalus
The overall look and feel of this antique wooden drinks centre is simply stunning and it oozes decadence and history. The top compartments have space for glasses, cards and other associated items. There is also a further lower drawer that opens to reveal further compartmental slots that can be used for cigars and other items. Once the upper compartment lids are open a brass button can be accessed to open the lower drawer.
Solid Silver Hallmarked Labels
Each decanter has a solid silver nameplate; one for Whiskey, one for Gin and one for Madeira. The labels are a later addition but are all hallmarked silver.
Madeira – hallmarked London 1934, makers marks for James Dixon & Sons
Whisky – hallmarked Birmingham 1969, makers marks for William Adams Ltd
Gin – hallmarked London 1971, makers marks for C J Vander Ltd
This oak tantalus was made in the 1800s in England and was probably owned by a well-to-do household of the time. This tantalus comes with a key enabling the new owner to lock and secure it. When locked neither the lower drawer, compartments or the decanters are accessible.
